Station observations and heritage links, enhance the architecture of transient stairwell to platforms 6/7
When I was asked to create a piece of public art for Nuneaton Train Station I was given full reign to choose any space and in any context. With a modest budget, I chose the windows on the bridge extension for platforms 6 and 7. I wanted to bring colour, warmth and emotion into this transient busy space. I wanted to slow people down a little and create a colourful welcome, that would enhance the passenger experience as they passed by. The location of the windows and translucency of the artwork would also mean that it is visible on the approach to the platforms, from inside the footbridge and also outside station.

As this commission was undertaken during a time of intermittent lockdowns and remote working. There are no people in the work, just remnants and evidence that people have been there, or are there but not seen.
Freight – References the station today. Inspired by time spent in observation at the station: freight trains; platforms; electrification; refurbishments; station architecture; engine fascination; perspective; vanishing points; shadows and shapes.
Lines – Reflects the past: layers of lines; signals; engines and map symbolism.
